MashCat entrevista en exclusiva a Loo & Placido (entrevista)

Hoy os presentamos otra de esas cosas que des de MashCat nos hace muchísima ilusión: se tratan de Loo & Placido, sin duda uno de los mejores DJs de mashups de todo el mundo sino los mejores./Today we present another of those things that make us feel enthusiastic: they are Loo & Placido, undoubtedly one of the best worldwide mashup DJs but the best.
Estos franceses son la referencia mashup en el mundo, sobretodo en el sonidos electro./These French are the world mashup reference, especially in electro sound.
Los hemos entrevistado y nos han revelado muchas cosas de su presente, pasado y futuro!!/We have interviewed them and they have revealed us a lot about their past, present and future!!
Ahí va la primera parte de la entrevista:/Here we go with the first part of the interview:

Bienvenue au l’Espagne Loo & Placido!/Welcome to Spain Loo & Placido!

¿Cómo fue?/Even better would be to say: welcome back! Since it does not make a week of another of your successful performances in our country (see photo), this time at the Black Lotus Festival, in Valencia, last Saturday (November 10). How was?

It was really awesome and huge opportunity to play just between LMFAO (Sky Blu) and 2 Many DJ’s in front of ten thousand people./Fue realmente impresionante y una oportunidad enorme tocar justo entre LMFAO (Sky Blu) y 2 Many DJ’s en frente de diez mil personas.

But first, you had already played in Spain: you were in the Zoológico Club‘s 1st anniversary at the Sala Arena Sala Marco Aldany (Madrid, September 29), also previously (April 14, February 18, etc.), as well as at the Fever (Bilbao, February 11), LowCost Festival (Benidorm, July 25), etc. So, this means that you play on Spain with some regularity?

So yes, we come to Spain for two years. We have played all over Spain in a lot of different places: Barcelona (BAM, Sala KGB and of course at the Razzmatazz), Madrid (as almost 6 or 7 times), Sevilla (in some festivals), etc. A lot of places! About twenty times already or even more. Spain is now the third or fourth country where we have played more, (we usually play in France, Germany and Switzerland). We love play in Spain, in fact I had lived in Spain actually in Madrid when I was young for two years and it is always a big pleasure to come to play here, to visit and to eat the good Spanish food./Así que sí, venimos a España desde hace ya dos años.

¿Y cuándo os vamos a poder ver de nuevo por España?/And when will be next opportunities to see you in Spain again?

We are going to come back next week:/Vamos a volver por aquí la siguiente semana:
– Friday 16, Urban Concept at the Plaza de Castillo-Elejabeitia (Artea, Vizcaya),/viernes 16, Urban Concept en la Plaza de Castillo-Elejabeitia (Artea, Vizcaya),
– Saturday 17, Bullshit Club at Fever (Bilbao),/sábado 17, Bullshit Club en Fever (Bilbao),
– Saturday 15 (December), Dollar Club at Sala The One (Alicante)./sábado 15 (diciembre), Dollar Club en Sala The One (Alicante).

¿Es tal vez la mejor sesión que habéis realizado en España?/Reviewing comments on Twitter from people who attended the Zoológico Club (September 29), it appears that your show was a total success. Perhaps the best session you have done in Spain?

Yes. Zoológico Club is a party invented by two friends of us in Madrid, two DJs from Kill the Hipsters!. We have always worked with them, before, when they had a party called Yes We Dance (which is where we played for the first time in Spain), and after, when they started the Zoológico Club, in which each week there is more than a thousand, almost two thousand people going crazy with the music. So yes, it is really fun play there. It is also where we played for the first in Spain and was in front of so many people and the answer has always been amazing, it is really a pleasure to play there, people going crazy, etc./Sí.
The photos you see on the Zoológico Club‘s website speak for themselves./Las fotos que puedas ver en la página web de Zoológico Club hablan por si solas.

Os dejamos un video promocional de Loo & Placido en Zoológico Club./We leave a Loo & Placido‘s promotional video at the Zoológico Club.

Felicidades Loo & Placido./We believe that the Loo & Placido‘s success is the logical consequence of their obvious talent, which is plain present in their latest promotional mixtape (Retro Future Shock vol.1, 2012), combined with the fact that in the mashup scene they are the only (or one of the first) who are focused only to the new electronic sounds (Ed Banger Records, hard electro, dubstup, etc.). From MashCat we reassert that Retro Future Shock is equally spectacular and surprising, and encourage all who have not done yet, to push play. Congratulations Loo & Placido.

You believe or not, Retro Future Shock is not only a promo mixtape, it is also a promo of Loo & Placido‘s show, of what you do in your lives sessions, is it?

Yeah of course. Retro Future Shock and every mix we realize like Electronic Popstar Killers (2009) and every single realized is a reflection of what we are going to play or what you can listen in live. And of course there is always some new stuff. We have some classics we always play but I think every week we also play some new tracks because we are always doing some new stuff, always excited on some new sound, and always want to play that last sound we just found, we wanted to play it to the people, to see their reaction and everything./Sí, por supuesto.

So yeah, this is really something that we like to do, to be flexible you know? And not only play always the same set even if we all have our own classics. We do these mashups also because it is a way to play something different from the other people. Maybe it is the same music, some tracks that another DJ played before us, but not in the same way, not with the same acapella, not with the same break or something. So it is all about surprising people and keeping people. Also entertain. It is all about having fun at the end and making people go crazy, jump around, just have fun, etc./Así que sí, esto es realmente algo que nos gusta hacer, ser flexibles, ¿Sabes?

At the end, it is all about having fun./Al final, lo importante es hacerlo pasar bien a la gente.

¿Lo será algún día?/Would you like to produce this songs in live and not only play and mix? Do you think that is nowadays possible to do? Would be someday?

We like the fact to DJ because we like also to put our hands to the air form time to time, and go to the crowd, have some fun, etc. Like this, live does not make really sense at the moment because we do not play like a band and the sound would not be the same either./Nos gusta la condición del DJ porque al mismo tiempo nos gusta poder poner nuestra manos en el aire, acercarnos a la multitud, hacer fiesta, etc.

We try to do a mixture between live and mixing because we are two, Laurent (Loo) on the sampler with Ableton and I (Placido) am with Serato. Furthermore now we are putting some videos to our show. So this is something more important and at the same time it brings something new because you have all the visuals that is going to fit to the music now. We are working hard on this and now we are going to do the first audio video show in two weeks in Paris, so we hope it will work. We are also going to use the microphone, we going to sing to a few songs, Mc on a few songs.

Therefore it is almost not like a live band but it is a mixture of live act and electronic music./Por lo tanto, no somos tanto una banda en directo sinó una mezcla de directo y música electrónica.

How many time have you spent in the production of the Retro Future Shock‘s songs?

We can say you spend a lot of time to find the perfect combinations. We have been doing mashup for twelve years now and we can say that to get excited again about some new mashups, some new combinations, you have to take your time, you have to find some new stuff to mix together, new material, acapellas, stems, etc. We do not know exactly how many because one song can take one day and another song will take ten days because you stop it, come back to eat and stop it again, etc. But produce mashups take a lot of time, it is a long process but at the end it is really fun to do, we are really happy with the result of this. And on January the second volume is going to take out./Lleva mucho tiempo dar con la combinación perfecta.

Before Retro Future Shock, you had made a similar amazing mixtape called Electronic Popstar Killers (2009). Wich are the biggest differences between EPK & RFS? There is a real influence of French electro (Daft Punk) in the first and dubstep (Skrillex) in the second one.

Just as we said before, just getting excited about new songs is what makes us continue to do this. I have been a big metal fun for a long time and in my opinion dubstep brings the metal and the electronic together. So when I discovered dubstep I really liked. I like you know? more the McDonald’s dubstep –ha ha– as I called it. Skrillex is like a big Mac you know? It is not a fancy or clever dubstep like in England. But I am not really into that kind of that dubstep, it is more what they call now drumstep, more violent, more metal based and yeah, Skrillex is really amazing, really entertaining and everybody like what he does so it was all natural to take a few of him songs and mix them together./Tal como hemos dicho antes, lo único que nos hace seguir con esto són las emociones que sentimos al oir nuevos temas. Me gusta ¿Sabes?

Even this, we still love French electro. In fact, we are at this moment doing something with Mr. Oizo, which is a big influence still for us, some Justice, some Daft Punk, which are still some of our biggest influences. Every song can influence us, from mombathoon to dubstep, to rap to French electro, Dutch house, etc. any song can be in the mix. The rule is that there are no rules, so this is the main point: we do not want to close anything; we are totally open to play any kind of music./A pesar de esto, todavía nos gusta la electrónica francesa.

¿Qué pasó?/Now is relatively easy to find Loo & Placido‘s songs. It seems there was a big silence between Electronic Popstar Killers and Retro Future Shock? Did you think to stop producing? Maybe you did a necessary artistic break? What happened?

No, no, no, –says quickly– it is completely different: few years ago, NRJ Radio (the biggest radio station in France) asked to do one-hour radio show and to bring them some exclusives mashups. It was like a top of the pop-mashups. So we produced mashups like crazies men, every week we had to produce I don’t know how many mashups for each radio show. We could not realize these mashups on the Internet because we are on contract, so we just realized them./No, no, no, –se apresura a decir– es completamente diferente: unos años atrás, la NRJ Radio, la cadena de radio más popular en Francia, nos pidió que hiciéramos programa de radio de una hora y que les hiciéramos algunos mashups exclusivos.

Then after, the top of the pop show became to a mix show, and later a podcast show. I am sorry you miss that because there was one-hour podast every week with new material we were playing.

These podcasts unfortunately are not more online and we did not keep them. Maybe we have a few somewhere and when we meet we could give you some but of course, we made hundreds and hundreds of mashups./Desgraciadamente, estos podcasts ya no estan disponibles en línea y no los conservamos.

We really could put them on the Internet./Realmente podríamos subirlos a Internet.

Por supuesto, sería fantástico!/Sure, it would be amazing!

But we also keep some material for us, for the mix, for the DJs sets, because when people book us they expect to listen something different from the other DJs. If you give all your material then every DJ can play the same set as you. So we do not want to give everything, we give something but not everything. We have to keep some exclusive tracks and some surprises for our sets.

Believe me, we have never stopped./Créeme, nunca nos hemos parado.

Soon, when we hit ten thousand likes on Facebook, wich I guess it is going to be in less than a week now, we are going to realize a lot of this old mashups. So in two weeks maxium we are going to upload a big, big file with a lot of the mashups we have made all over the years for MTV Mashups, for NRJ Radio shows on France and different stuff we never realized before because we keep it for us and now we do not play it any more.

Desde MashCat estaremos en vilo./From MashCat we are dreaming in that moment.

There is nothing else to add, if you can, do not miss the chance to see these mashup monsters in live (http://www.looandplacido.com/tour.cfm).
